Summer is approaching and we’re already daydreaming of sunshine and sandy toes.
As you begin to mentally prepare to bare more skin, we’ve rounded up some helpful tips to help you up your beauty game and flaunt your sexiest skin ever.
We assume you already know the basics for sun protection. But just for good measure, let’s do a quick refresher to start…
ANTI-AGING & SUN DAMAGE 101
(1) SPF – obvi.
When it comes to protecting your skin from the harmful rays of the sun, you should know that your first defense is to apply sunscreen daily. But be wary – even if you have a fantastic, go-to UVA/UVB broad spectrum sunscreen, you could still be making these 5 big sunscreen mistakes.
One new practice that we’ve picked up recently is to keep these Neutrogena sunscreen sticks with us all day. Most women know that your hands are one of the first places that you’ll notice signs of skin aging; a few swipes of this stick over your hands is a convenient and mess-free way to keep them protected from the sun all day.
(2) Hydrate, and repeat
Yep, your skin gets thirsty when the temp rises too. Make the investment in a sturdy and earth-friendly, water bottle that you vow will never leave your side.
We’re fans of these reusable water bottles from Swell – they keep drinks cold for 24 hours, and hot for 12 hours.
If you’re looking for added hydration, consider carrying this little cutie around in your beach bag to keep your skin hydrated and refreshed even in the hot summer sun.
(3) Seek out shade
Don’t be shy about ducking out of the direct sunlight in favor of cooler temps and sun protection. Consider lounging in a luxe cabana or simply grab an oversized sunhat to keep the sun at bay.
If a golden glow is a must for you, at least consider limiting your time spent sunbathing during peak hours, when the sun is at its most brutal, typically 10am – 2pm.

(4) Exfoliate sister
There are many benefits to exfoliation, but possibly none more important than its job in cell turnover.
As Dr. Jessica Weiser, M.D. explains, “exfoliation improves the skin turnover, which is beneficial for skin renewal, which in turn keeps skin radiant and fresh.”
There are endless articles and theories around how often you should exfoliate, but most seem to settle around 2-3 times per week.
(5) Protect that pout
Speaking of exfoliation, don’t forget your lips are skin too! Here’s a super simple DIY natural lip scrub from our friends at The Beauty Department to try.
Once you’ve exfoliated, be sure to layer on the SPF protection on your lips as well. Because, let’s face it, chapped and blistered lips are not a part of the sexy, summer skin-look we’re going for.
It’s easy to forget this step, especially if you’re dying to use your new favorite lip stain to give yourself that bold pop of color. (6) Fabrics can fool you

Consider taking a break from makeup, or at least your full makeup routine to give your skin a little breathing room.
