GIFT GIVING ETIQUETTE
Here are some common questions many of us may find ourselves asking each holiday season.
How much should I spend?
Figure out the nicest thing you can afford within your means. Make a list and check it twice. Create a budget you are comfortable with for each person. Gift giving is about being thoughtful and showing appreciation, it’s not about going into debt.
Who should I give gifts to?
Gift giving is about showing your appreciation to family and friends. A gift exchange plan is better for a group of friends, set an appropriate price that works for everyone. If someone celebrates a different holiday, it’s ok to get them a present if you want, as long as it isn’t religious.
Should I give a gift?
If someone decides to give you a gracious gift, you are not required to reciprocate. Graciously accept and thank them nicely. You should not feel compelled to give just because you received.
Are gift cards and gift receipts okay?
Totally! Gift cards are very thoughtful since you have thought about the other person’s interest. It’s always a good idea to include gift receipts, if they don’t like the gift or it doesn’t fit. They will be able to get something they really love.
If you’re still at a loss, consider splurging on an experience, instead of a tangible gift. Sometimes a trip, or even little local adventure, can be a great gift! Zip lining, mini golf, spa day, horseback riding, cooking class – be creative!
Sending Christmas Cards?
Timing is everything on Christmas cards.
The Post Office gets super busy during the holidays, so plan accordingly.
Send out cards early! They should arrive by mid-December.
If your primary relationship with someone is a digital one, then an email card might be a nice idea. If the recipient is family or a friend so close they may as well be part of the family, then a standard card is going to be the best choice.
If you are running out of time to send them by Christmas, New Years cards are a great option. Or opt for that digital card – it’s better than nothing, and typically free!
These tips should help during your holiday shopping sprees and planning.
We know it is a stressful time of year, don’t over do it – remember WHY you’re going through the hassle.
WHAT MAKES A GREAT GIFT
“The best gift I received was a few days before Christmas a few years ago. I was heading to Italy for school and my dad surprised me with my very own Louis Vuitton NeverFold MM. I used it as my book bag, weekend bag and everyday bag. To this day I look at it and remember such a special Christmas, one I will never forget.”
“I woke up one morning wondering where my husband was going on Christmas day. He got up and walked out the door. Little did I know he had a surprise about to roll in. He gave me the prettiest purple beach cruiser bike with a basket. I was so happy and eager, we ended up going for a cruise that day. To this day I still ride it when I can with my dog following beside me.”
“We have a tradition on Christmas to open all of our gifts on Christmas Eve. The best gift I ever received was 2 years ago. A good friend of mine picked out a Burberry Diamond Quilted Jacket. Man was I in shock…It’s one of those gifts that when you wear it or see it you think of your friendship. He is an amazing friend and a gift that I will cherish forever.”
With the holidays just 3 weeks away, gifting can be tough but it doesn’t have to be if you have the right tools, plans but mostly importantly the right attitude!
