Beauty in your 40s

Now that you’ve bloomed into a better, more mature, more polished version of yourself, it’s time to make better decisions with your skincare routine—tailor your regimen, correct damage done in your younger, less sensible days, and slow down the aging process with a few beauty secrets that only come with the wisdom of experience.

Here’s how you can make 40 the new 30 with a few skincare tips.

You’ve heard skincare is important at any age, but there are some habits you should commit to when you reach your forties.

Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse

Whether you do wear makeup daily or not, it’s crucial to dedicate some time every day to thoroughly clean your face. The beauty secret is a using a creamy cleanser or Prep-N-Glow cleansing cloths that won’t strip your skin of its natural moisture.

Green Tea, Water and Red Wine

Drink lots of water, green tea, and the occasional glass of red wine. Hopefully water is a no-brainer – 8 glasses a day will keep your body hydrated, your skin glowing, and your hair and nails growing. But green tea (and plenty of it) and the occasional glass of red wine are great, too. They’re full of antioxidants that keep your insides churning at 100%. Something we wish we had started earlier!

Less is More

Brightening your skin is key when you hit 40; it’s no secret that we all want luminous skin that lasts forever. Fight dark spots that may crop up from your time spent at the beach or pool with a skin brightener. Restore your skin and turn back the clock.

The trick is to keep your makeup soft and enhance your look with the right products. Take it from Anastasia Soare, Jennifer Lopez’s brow guru.  “You need color at this age, but you don’t want anything too heavy,” he says. Don’t forget a brow pencil and a thin mascara wand; they’ll give you an instant eye lift. A small comb allows you to thoroughly coat lashes from root to tip, and “filling in your brows, wipes 10 years off your face.”

Microcurrent Technology

Treat aging skin. Deeper lines start appearing in your late-thirties. By 40, you may have to deal not only with more prominent wrinkles, but also with skin discoloration and dryer skin. This is the time to invest in microcurrent technology. It’s an at-home facial toning device which contours, tones, and reduces wrinkles. Like all of the muscles in your body, your facial muscles need a good workout routine to keep things firm—think lifted cheekbones, a contoured jawline, and overall enviably toned facial features!

Ditch the bun and ponytail

However, there are some hairstyles that go out the window in your 40s. Hair pulled back tightly in a bun or ponytail serves no one after 45. Even though it looks sleek, just ditch the updo’s. However, once you get above a certain age, your hair should soften your face.  The easiest approach is to go for face framing layers (with or without bangs) at any length that makes you happy.

Drop the late nights

The concept of “beauty sleep” sounds silly but gone are the days when you should staying up until 2 a.m. These days, if you’re staying up until 2 a.m., the next morning, you might look older than you actually are. After 40, sleep makes a big difference in one’s appearance. Even after a quick 10-minute nap, you’ll look refreshed and about 5 years younger. So make your sleep a priority.

Toss the Shimmery Shadows

The last thing you want to do is make fine lines around the eyes more obvious, and this is exactly what shimmery and frosted eye shadow does. The reflective particles on your lids can bring attention to signs of aging, says Jo Levy, director of artistry at Rouge Bunny Rouge. She suggests choosing cream or matte eye shadows with a velvet or satin finish that will minimize discoloration and fine lines.

You don’t need to get rid of much but these are just a few skincare tips to help you look and feel younger.

Investing in the right products for your skin in your 40’s is really important. We have a list of anti-aging items to add to your skincare routine.

If you don’t use a serum now, you should. It is in your 40s that serums come into their own. They can be divided into the Big 3 for brightening, sun damage, and wrinkles. To repair and protect, look for a serum rich in antioxidants, like vitamin C or E, or epidermal growth factors to help stimulate collagen production. We recommend NuFACE Collagen Booster which restores a natural glow and suppleness to aging or lackluster skin, and promotes healing with Copper Peptides.

SPF should be worn daily! This will help prevent further sun damage. It’s also advisable to choose a product that contains antioxidants in it as this can help reverse some of the damage you already have. We also love that most SPFs come as a tinted moisturizer too. We love the Laura Mercier which illuminates as you wear it.

A good at-home skincare routine should include a low dose retinol.  It’s time to upgrade to a prescription retinol like retinoic acid or Retin-A, or move up in concentration, from .025%, for example, to .03%. “Retinol reminds skin cells to behave as they did when they were young and healthy—it minimizes wrinkles, thickens skin, controls acne, strengthens blood vessels (so there’s less breakage and discoloration), and fades sun spots,” Rachel Nazarian, MD of dermatology says.

Inspirational quotes from the stars on how to grow old gracefully.
The starlet herself, Kate Winslet said it best. “I’m baffled that anyone might not think women get more beautiful as they get older. Confidence comes with age, and looking beautiful comes from the confidence someone has in themselves.” —from Net-a-Porter magazine

Actress Helen Mirren, says “I’m a woman that loves makeup and getting dressed up. As I get older, I don’t look as good, but I don’t give a damn. ‘As you reach each age, you gain the understanding you need to deal with it and enjoy it.”

Our skin inevitably changes constantly in our 40’s and beyond.  Because of this, you need to tailor your skincare routines to suit your skin. In your 40’s moisturizing and keeping skin hydrated is key to maintaining healthy skin.
